Evidence2Practice Ontario drives digital implementations into systems across hospitals in Ontario to support clinicians in delivering high-quality care for various clinical conditions. The program partnered with four hospitals to digitize pathways in the emergency department so patients with Sickle Cell Disease can receive evidence-based treatments quickly, effectively, and with discrimination-free compassion.

    Presented by:

Vithu Kugathasan is a Manager of Digital Health Projects at North York General Hospital and the Program Manager for Evidence2Practice Ontario, leading acute care implementations focused on digitizing quality standards to support clinicians in providing quality care at the point of care. He also is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Toronto under the Institute for Health Policy, Management, & Evaluation (IHPME)– teaching courses in the Master of Health Informatics (MHI) program such as Systems Analysis and Process Innovation and Fundamentals in Health Informatics. Vithu holds a Master of Health Informatics degree from the University of Toronto, as well as a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree from Western University. He has a passion for advancing digital health across the system, aiming to collaborate and innovate to improve the experience of patients and clinicians.

Tanya Louca, MSc, BScN, RN - As a Digital Health Project Manager at North York General Hospital (NYGH), Tanya Louca, spearheads the implementation of innovative healthcare solutions. She currently supports the acute care Evidence2Practice (E2P) Ontario program, a pioneering provincial initiative that integrates clinical health quality standards into hospital information systems throughout the region. Drawing from her foundational experience as a critical care nurse, Tanya has developed extensive expertise in leveraging digital health strategies to enhance healthcare accessibility and quality. Her academic credentials, combined with hands-on clinical experience, provide a unique perspective in bridging the gap between technical solutions and practical healthcare delivery. Tanya's interests include change management and the application of implementation science frameworks. Her commitment to building sustainable health projects has contributed to advancing digital health initiatives at NYGH and across Ontario's healthcare landscape.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being explored to support a wide range of healthcare applications. Over the past decade, a major focus has been on training machine learning models to predict clinical outcomes and risks, with the goal of enhancing decision-making around assessment and care, referred to as clinical decision support. The hope is that integrating predictions into the clinic at the point of decision-making will meaningfully impact patient care, translating to more accurate assessment, personalized treatment, and targeted prevention or intervention.

Yet, a growing body of evidence shows that AI models used in healthcare can reinforce or even amplify existing biases, particularly against marginalized or underrepresented patient groups. Although clinical oversight, or the presence of a "human in the loop", is often proposed as a safeguard, it remains unclear whether this approach is sufficient to prevent AI from exacerbating health inequities when deployed.

In this presentation, we explore the health equity implications of AI-based clinical decision support for assessing inpatient violence risk in acute psychiatric settings. Drawing on our interdisciplinary research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), we present findings from two studies that demonstrate how social and systemic biases can become embedded in training datasets, which, in turn, influence AI model predictions in ways that disadvantage socially and racially marginalized patients. We also share insights from our experiments in human-computer interaction, which suggest that clinical oversight may not be sufficient to mitigate these biases. We conclude with an overview of our future research, which argues for the need to re-imagine how we design and deploy AI in contexts where it runs the risk of exacerbating existing health inequities.

    Presented by:

Marta Maslej and Laura Sikstrom - Marta Maslej is a Staff Scientist with The Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics at CAMH and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Toronto. Laura Sikstrom is a Scientist with The Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics at CAMH and Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at The University of Toronto. At CAMH, Drs. Maslej and Sikstrom lead the Predictive Care Team, which uses interdisciplinary methods to understand how AI applications will impact mental health care, with a focus on responsible integration and health equity.

Innowell is focused on transforming the way the world approaches mental health and addictions. We have developed a data-driven platform for mental health and addiction clients in individual clinical settings, hospitals and larger health systems. The Innowell platform provides personalized, measurement-based care, equipping clinicians with a decision support system that enables informed clinical decision-making and allows patients to be more engaged in their mental health care – all backed by over fifteen (15) years of comprehensive research and clinical validation at the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney.  Quantitative and qualitative data supports the utilization of technology in the clinical setting to improve the individualized care pathways for clients and patients.  Utilizing an emental health platform allows for a better use of our health human resources and incorporates models of care that support clients in receiving the best care at the right time with the right level of intervention.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Personalized care using technology to provide real time MHA monitoring

    2. Proactive decision-making using Measurement Based Care

    Presented by:

Heather Lumley RP, MA (psychology), CHE

Heather has over twenty years of clinical mental health and addictions experience working as a visionary leader, executive and clinician in the mental healthcare sector. Heather is a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario and completed her Master of Arts (psychology) at Antioch University Seattle.  Heather completed her certification to become a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders in 2021.  Heather trained in Organizational and Behavioural Coaching Systems (ORCS) to bring theory to practice when building and implementing change at the individual and organizational level.  Heather completed several leadership courses at Ivey School of Business and Rotman School of Management Executive Programs. Her difference from other leaders’ rests in her experience in clinical service delivery, system level design and developing policy/practices that are embedded in logic, are fiscally responsible and meet the needs of communities to solve the gap in mental health and addiction services.  Heather’s journey into the mental health space is based in her belief that we can augment direct clinical care with digital technologies that support the best outcomes for patients and clients.
