The HL7 International Patient Summary (IPS) is an electronic health record containing essential healthcare information intended for use in unscheduled, cross-border care scenarios.

Organizations, such as the Office of National Coordinator for Health Information (ONC) recognize the importance of being able to have a patients’ data follow them wherever they go so that they can retrieve the data when and where it matters most.

The Global Digital Health Partnership (GDHP) Interoperability Work Stream’s IPS Work Group kicked off in December 2020 with an objective to advance efforts to have patients’ health data flow across country borders for unscheduled patient care. The work group comprises 17 countries and territories including the WHO.

Canada Health Infoway has identified the implementation of an International Patient Summary at a national level is a strategic and priority area. How could this be implemented and support in Canada? Are there other initiatives it could be tied to?

The CHIEF Executive Forum members are invited to give feedback and have their voices heard at this C90 virtual event.
